3 car-ramming attacks in Hong Kong ‘linked to dispute between triad gangs over woman’ leave 3 men in hospital

  • First attack at around 1.39am leaves 19-year-old driver of Mercedes-Benz unconscious
  • About 90 minutes later, 28-year-old driver and his passenger assaulted by about 20 men, while in third attack at 5.45am, two men targeted by about 10 assailants

An alleged dispute between two triad gangs over a woman triggered three car-ramming attacks in northwestern Hong Kong within the space of four hours that left three men in hospital on Wednesday.

In the first case, a white Mercedes-Benz driven by a 19-year-old man was intercepted by three other vehicles at the junction of Hoi Wing Road and Castle Peak Road near Sam Shing railway station in Tuen Mun at around 1.39am, according to a source.

“More than 10 black-clad assailants jumped out from the three vehicles and attacked [the driver of the Mercedes-Benz] with knives,” the insider said. “The victim managed to escape, driving away from the scene.”

He said the three vehicles gave chase and rammed into the Mercedes-Benz.

“After driving for a distance of about 100 metres [328 feet], the victim’s car eventually came to a stop,” the source said.

One of the attackers’ cars was extensively damaged and abandoned. Some of them fled in the two remaining vehicles, while footage posted online showed three suspected assailants fleeing on foot behind them before officers arrived at the scene.

Police found the 19-year-old injured driver unconscious in the Mercedes-Benz and he was rushed to Tuen Mun Hospital.

About 90 minutes later, a 28-year-old driver carrying 29-year-old passenger pulled his vehicle over on Hong King Road near Hong Lok Road MTR station in Yuen Long, the same source said.

Four or five cars arrived and about 20 men jumped out, wielding wooden rods and knives, which they used to damage the victim’s vehicle.

The victim managed to drive off and went to Yuen Long police station to file a report. The driver and his passenger were unhurt, while his car suffered damage to its headlights, bonnet and front and rear bumpers.

In the third attack, two men aged 24 and 30 were targeted when their Toyota sedan was intercepted on Tin Fuk Road outside Tin Shui Cycling Park in Tin Shui Wai at around 5.45am.

A police spokesman said the attack involved about 10 assailants, who fled before officers arrived.

The older man was unconscious when emergency personnel arrived. Both victims were taken to Tuen Mun Hospital for treatment.

A police source said 13 people had been arrested as of 11pm, including five with alleged ties to the Wo Shing Wo triad. The other eight people arrested had suspected ties to the rival Sun Yee On triad.

The operation was continuing and further arrests would be made, the Post was told.

The source said a preliminary investigation showed that the three attacks were linked and provoked by a dispute over a woman between alleged members of the two rival triads in a pub two days ago.

Detectives from the New Territories North anti-triad squad are investigating the cases.

In October, two high-profile incidents involving gangsters in the New Territories prompted police to conduct two separate anti-triad operations across the city.

On October 25, several suspected Sun Yee On triad members assaulted three security guards after their vehicles were impounded for illegal parking outside a Tuen Mun public housing estate.

In a separate case on October 31, four suspected faction leaders of the Wo Shing Wo triad were accused of verbally abusing three policemen during an operation against illegal parking in Yuen Long.

Among them was the alleged leader of a faction in Yuen Long, known as “Ku Yeh Wah”. He was also among those arrested when a white-clad mob bearing sticks and metal rods attacked protesters and commuters at a station on the night between July 21 and 22 in 2019 during the anti-government protests. He was not charged.

Police handled 2,334 reports of triad-related crime last year, an 8.6 per cent drop from 2,554 cases logged in 2022.
