Hong Kong police have arrested a truck driver on suspicion of dangerous driving after one of the wooden boards the vehicle was carrying allegedly fell onto railway tracks, causing a train to derail in Tuen Mun.

The force said on Saturday a truck travelling along Castle Peak Road when one of the wooden boards it was transporting, measuring 50cm by 20cm (20 inches by 8 inches), fell off at the spot where the train was derailed.

The 49-year-old driver’s arrest followed a police report by Hong Kong’s rail operator.

The MTR Corporation earlier said the train was derailed at around 9.25am near Chung Uk Tsuen station as it was returning to the Tuen Mun Depot.

The railway operator said an initial investigation showed that the train involved had followed traffic signals and did not speed.
