2 dead, 3 injured in Hong Kong collision, with motorcyclist suspected to have run red light at junction

Two people died and three others were injured after a motorcycle was suspected to have run a red light and collided with a taxi in Hong Kong early on Sunday.

The crash at the junction of Nathan Road and Argyle Street in Mong Kok occurred at around 2.46am, police said. The taxi was travelling along Nathan Road and the motorbike was on Argyle Street.

A source familiar with the case said the motorbike was suspected to have run a red light at the junction and collided with the taxi heading along Nathan Road under a green light.

The motorcyclist, 21, and his woman passenger, 22, were thrown off their vehicle by the impact. They sustained multiple injuries and were rushed unconscious to Kwong Wah Hospital in Yau Ma Tei. She was pronounced dead at 3.43am and the man at 3.55am.

The taxi driver, 27, and his passenger, 37, suffered injuries to their limbs. They were sent to the same hospital for treatment.

A pedestrian, 69, was hit by flying debris from the crash and was cut on the face. He was also sent to Kwong Wah Hospital for treatment.

A police traffic special investigation team is investigating the accident.

The force urged anyone who witnessed the accident or had any information to contact investigating officers on 3661 9023.
