Hong Kong girl, 12, hurt while trying to stop father during alleged knife attack on mother at home

  • Father, 58, arrested for wounding in connection with 5am incident

A 12-year-old Hong Kong girl was injured while trying to intervene when her father allegedly attacked her mother with a knife at home early on Sunday.

Police arrested the man, 58, after he allegedly attacked his wife, 53, at around 5am at their home on Peel Street, Central.

It was understood that the man was drinking alone at around 3am, when his wife and two daughters, aged 12 and 14, returned to their home, transitional housing for those waiting for a public flat for a few years.

The man accused his wife of infidelity and allegedly attacked her with a 30cm-long (12 inches) knife. The 12-year-old tried to stop her father but also got hurt in the fight. Her sister rushed out of the flat to seek help.

The mother sustained injuries to her left hand, back, neck and right ankle. The little finger on her left hand was cut off by the knife.

The wife and daughter were rushed to Queen Mary Hospital in Pok Fu Lam for treatment, while police arrested the man in connection with the wounding case.

Barry Wong Man-sing, executive director of the NGO Lok Kwan Social Service which operates the transitional housing, said they cleaned up the bloodstained scene after police removed their cordon at around 1pm.

The NGO also reached out to every household in the building to see if they needed emotional support, he said.

Wong said the girl was in a largely stable condition, but the mother had been severely injured and needed further medical treatment. A relative from the mother’s side is looking after the other daughter.

Wong said the family moved into the flat in March last year and the couple had been fighting, but he declined to provide further details, citing privacy concerns.

The Social Welfare Department said a social worker had been previously assigned to the case and had also contacted the family members following the incident to provide any necessary assistance.

The Housing Bureau said it had been in touch with the operator to find out more about the matter and had requested thorough follow-up action, including providing help to the households involved and cooperating with the police investigation.
