Hong Kong woman living in subdivided flat killed in tenement building fire

A Hong Kong woman living in a subdivided flat died after a fire broke out at her tenement building on Sunday morning.

Police received a report of fire and thick smoke coming from the building on Mong Kok’s Fa Yuen Street at around 6am.

Firefighters discovered the 45-year-old woman, surnamed Choi, lying unconscious in her room after they put out the blaze.

The victim was in a coma when she was brought to Kwong Wah Hospital, where she was later certified dead.

Police said the blaze prompted three other tenants to dash for safety.

A witness said Choi had lived in a subdivided flat on the ninth floor.
