A truck driver in Hong Kong had a narrow escape at a wholesale fish market on Tuesday, after he accidentally stepped on the accelerator pedal and drove his vehicle into the sea.
A police spokesman said the truck, with the 44-year-old man behind the wheel, plunged into the waters near the Kwun Tong Wholesale Fish Market on Tung Yuen Street in Yau Tong at 7.21am.
“The driver was able to get out of the truck and swim ashore,” the spokesman said.
The force said the driver passed a breathalyser test, but was sent to United Christian Hospital in Kwun Tong after complaining of a headache.
According to police, the truck was parked about eight metres (26 feet) from the water.
“It was in the process of loading goods when the driver accidentally hit the accelerator pedal,” the spokesman said.
The truck then darted forward and plunged into the sea.
A video clip posted online shows the vehicle’s cargo compartment still visible in the waters between the edge of the market and a barge, while the truck’s driver cabin and trailer were already beneath the surface.
Police said officers from the Kowloon East traffic unit were investigating the case.
