Hong Kong police have arrested a 35-year-old taxi driver and are investigating whether he was paid to use his rented cab to deliver illegal drugs after HK$140,000 (US$18,000) worth of narcotics was found in his vehicle.

Acting on a tip-off, police intercepted the taxi at Lai Kok Estate in Sham Shui Po district during an anti-narcotics operation on Tuesday night.

“Officers seized 154 grams [5.4oz] of what appeared to be crystal meth, 23 grams of suspected cocaine, 66 grams of suspected ketamine, along with 33 grams of suspected cannabidiol oil inside the taxi,” the force said on Wednesday.

Police said the drugs had an estimated street value of HK$140,000.

The taxi driver was detained on suspicion of trafficking in a dangerous drug – an offence punishable by up to life in prison and a HK$5 million fine.

As of Wednesday morning, the suspect was still in custody for questioning.
