An off-duty Hong Kong police officer has been remanded in custody after being charged with raping a 21-year-old woman in a residential flat.
Police constable Ching Long, 24, appeared in Fanling Court on Friday after he was charged with one count of rape.
He allegedly attacked the woman in a flat in Tai Po on June 3.
The force said officers launched an investigation after the woman made a report to police at about 3pm on Wednesday.
“After conducting an initial investigation, police arrested a 24-year-old man in Tai Po on the same day on suspicion of rape,” police said on Thursday.
Detectives from the New Territories North regional crime unit are following up on the case.
The officer has been suspended from duty, according to the force.
“The force places great importance on the conduct of officers, and any violation of the law by its personnel will not be tolerated or condoned. It will be dealt with strictly and seriously,” police said.
Acting Principal Magistrate Winnie Lau Yee-wan did not grant bail to the defendant and adjourned the case to September 13.
