Hong Kong police have made the city’s biggest seizure of cocaine so far this year, confiscating HK$300 million (US$38.4 million) worth of the drug in a residential flat in the New Territories.

The force said on Friday that a 22-year-old man was arrested the day before when officers raided the Castle Peak Road flat in a private housing estate in Yuen Long. During the operation, police discovered 386kg (851lbs) of narcotics.

Wilson Tam Wai-shun, superintendent for operations at the narcotics bureau, said the man was intercepted in a police ambush when he left the building on Thursday afternoon.

Officers seized 411 grams of what appeared to be ketamine in a plastic bag he was carrying.

“Officers then brought the man back to his rented flat [in the building] for a search, where they discovered 386 slabs of suspected cocaine, each weighing one kilogram, with a total value exceeding HK$300 million,” Tam said.

The man was detained on suspicion of trafficking in a dangerous drug – an offence punishable by up to life in prison and a HK$5 million fine.
