Hong Kong police have arrested a woman in connection with a theft case as she tried to leave the city through a border checkpoint, after officers used surveillance camera footage to identify her.

A source familiar with the case said on Friday the 57-year-old woman from mainland China was accused of stealing HK$3,200 (US$410) from a 63-year-old man who was lured to a building stairwell with the promise of sex services.

The insider said the woman approached the man on Chun Yeung Street in North Point at about 1.30pm on July 18, offering sex services. He was subsequently taken to the nearby building.

“When reaching the third-floor staircase, the woman embraced the man and snatched a wallet containing HK$3,200 from his waist bag,” he said. “She then stole the money and ran downstairs.”

Senior Inspector Fok Lap-yi of the Eastern district criminal investigation unit said police pored over a large amount of surveillance camera footage to identify the suspect and her escape route.
