Hong Kong resident Ramanjit Singh extradited to India over role in 2016 jailbreak

Ramanjit Singh, a Hong Kong resident accused of masterminding a 2016 jailbreak in India, has been extradited back to his home country, the Post has learned.

Hong Kong police, without naming the 35-year-old, confirmed that a fugitive had been extradited to India on Thursday.

Interpol had put Singh, also known as Romi, on a global watch list after New Delhi accused him of jumping bail having orchestrated a jailbreak in the northern state of Punjab in November 2016, as well as a series of terrorist attacks and political killings in India.

A Hong Kong magistrate approved his extradition in 2022 but Singh filed a separate non-refoulement , or protection, claim in the High Court.

He also applied for a writ of habeas corpus in the High Court and argued that his confinement was illegal due to defects in the reasoning in approving the extradition request from the Indian government.

But his bid was rejected in 2023 as the judge found insufficient evidence New Delhi was pursuing him for either his religious beliefs or political views, or he would be subject to cruel and inhumane treatment as a result of his deportation.
