A 47-year-old man wanted in connection with the murder of a property agent in Toronto earlier this month has fled to Hong Kong, according to Canadian police.
Lisa Moskaluk, a media relations officer with the York Regional Police in Toronto, said the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) had confirmed to its investigators that Zhixiong Marko Hu, 47, from the city of Markham had travelled to Hong Kong.
“All we know is Hu travelled to Hong Kong. We do not have information regarding his movements after that,” she said.
The Post has reached out to Hong Kong police for comment.
Despite the issue of a warrant for Hu’s arrest, Moskaluk revealed that Canadian police would be pursuing a red notice from Interpol to launch a global manhunt for the man suspected of murdering Anita Mui Yuk-ying, 56.
“A red notice is actually an international alert for a wanted person. It’s not an actual arrest warrant,” she said, adding the notice had no expiration date and could help with bringing a person to justice many years after the offence was committed.
Senior spokeswoman Rebecca Purdy of CBSA told the Post the agency received a request from York Regional Police on August 13 for the suspect’s travel history, which was answered the same day.
“The info provided to the police was that the suspect had left the country on August 12,” she said.
Hu left Canada, three days after Mui was reported missing by her family. Local media said the victim was a property agent.
On the same day she was reported missing, police found her Mercedes-Benz SUV in the area of Finch Avenue East and Warden Avenue in the Scarborough district of Toronto.
Meanwhile, burned human remains were found in the area of Avro Arrow Road and Highway 400 in the town of Parry Sound in Ontario on the day Hu left the country.
The location is more than 200km (124 miles) away from the site where her car was found.
According to Canadian police, the Office of the Chief Coroner positively identified the deceased as Mui on August 21.
Police investigations led officers to arrest three young people in possession of property belonging to Mui. The three youths were later charged with firearms and fraud-related offences.
On Tuesday, a Canada-wide warrant for first-degree murder was issued for Hu.
Officers have seized two vehicles associated with Hu, a white Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van and a grey Porsche Cayenne SUV in connection with the murder case.

On August 22, the day after burned human remains were identified, Canadian police said investigators believed the case was a “targeted incident”.
They also revealed that officers had identified a vehicle of interest – a white Mercedes-Benz Sprinter cargo van – in connection with the case.
“Investigators believe Mui was transported in a vehicle similar to this,” Canadian police said.
Hong Kong has been caught in the geopolitical battle between China and the West after Beijing imposed a national security law on the city in 2020 in response to the months-long anti-government protests the previous year.
Several countries – including the United States, Britain, Australia, Canada and Germany – suspended extradition agreements with Hong Kong in protest, drawing tit-for-tat retaliation from Beijing, which ordered the city to do the same.
Hong Kong’s security minister, Chris Tang Ping-keung, told the Post in a recent interview that the suspension had an impact on Hong Kong but stressed the city had not become a haven for criminals.
The security chief added he did not see a trend of criminals taking refuge in Hong Kong due to its lack of extradition deals with other countries, as the city could still hand them over via other means. But he stopped short of revealing how many of such case-by-case deals had been struck since 2020.
