A former assistant to two ex-lawmakers has been sentenced to seven years and four months over possession of a rifle and more than 200 bullets found in a Hong Kong flat related to a thwarted bomb plot to kill police during the city’s 2019 social unrest.

Defence lawyers for Chung Suet-ying, 33, on Friday told Mrs Justice Judianna Wai-ling Barnes in the High Court that the weapon and ammunition were found in December 2019 at a Tai Po flat where she lived with her ex-boyfriend David Su, who was involved in a conspiracy to kill police at the time.

Chung let the weapons, all belonging to Su, be stored under the bed in the couple’s room because she wanted to maintain the relationship with him, the lawyers added.

Barnes said she believed Chung had no intent to use the rifle and her crime was committed during a relationship with a “wrong person she loved”.

“I accept you sincerely repent and regret committing the offence,” Barnes told the defendant, noting Chung’s good behaviour in custody over the past four years showed positive rehabilitation.

Chung admitted one count of possession of arms or ammunition without a licence, an offence punishable for 14 years in prison. Su had earlier pleaded guilty.

Police found a rifle and 241 bullets in the flat on December 20, 2019, after they apprehended Su outside Jade Plaza in Tai Po when he resisted arrest and fired at an officer.
