A 73-year-old Hong Kong man in a wheelchair narrowly escaped death after accidentally reversing off a train platform and falling onto tracks in the New Territories on Monday.

The man was waiting for a train at Tai Hing (North) light rail stop on Tai Fong Street in Tuen Mun at around 5.30am when he fell onto the tracks, a source familiar with the matter said.

According to a police spokeswoman, the man was discovered by a passer-by who called officers.

The man sustained head injuries and was taken to Tuen Mun Hospital for treatment after he was rescued by emergency personnel, she said.

The insider said: “The victim told officers it was an accident and that he had no intention of committing suicide.”

The light rail service was disrupted for about five minutes, according to police.
