Hong Kong police have arrested a chemist who allegedly lured a woman into his Tesla car near the Lan Kwai Fong nightlife area by offering her a lift home, drove her to The Peak and then sexually assaulted her.
The alleged attack prompted police on Wednesday to remind residents to remain vigilant and avoid getting into cars with strangers.
A source said the 48-year-old suspect, a chemist at a public hospital, was apprehended when he went for lunch from work on Wednesday.
As of Wednesday evening, the man, a local resident, remained in police custody.
The woman, an office worker, had been waiting for a taxi at about 4am on Sunday to return to her Wan Chai home after drinking with friends in Central.
“After failing to find a taxi, the victim was allegedly approached by the suspect in his Tesla and was offered a ride home. He claimed it was on his way and invited her into his car,” the insider said.

He said the man drove to The Peak and allegedly molested the woman who tried stop him.
“A preliminary investigation showed the victim was first offered white wine in the car but she rejected the offer,” he said. “She took one or two sips when she was given a glass of whisky.”
The source said the man was suspected of taking advantage of the victim’s drunkenness to sexually assault her in the car. After the alleged assault, the victim was driven to her Wan Chai home.
The woman reported the case to police on Monday. After checking surveillance camera footage, officers arrested the man outside his hospital on Wednesday.
The suspect was detained on suspicion of indecent assault – an offence punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
Inspector Yiu Oi-yau of the Central district crime squad said the suspect used the offer of a lift as a pretext to lure the victim who displayed signs of intoxication into his car.
“Firstly, we urge the public to be vigilant and avoid getting into cars with strangers,” she said.
“Secondly, after drinking, it is advisable to avoid leaving alone, preferably leaving with friends to ensure personal safety and remain alert.”
Police are investigating whether the suspect was involved in similar cases.
Between January and July this year, police handled 671 reports of indecent assault across the city, a 2.6 per cent rise from 652 cases logged in the same period in 2023.
