Hong Kong’s correctional services chief has said his department will be undeterred by violent intimidation after a recent attack on an officer outside a prison, which was allegedly carried out by a group of men with triad ties.

Commissioner of Correctional Services Wong Kwok-hing on Sunday condemned the assault as he visited United Christian Hospital in Kwun Tong to see the injured officer, who he said was in a stable condition.

“The Correctional Services Department [CSD] severely condemned the lawless violence and we believe that the assailants blatantly challenged the rule of law and undermined social order,” he said.

“Every colleague of the Correctional Services Department is a professional law enforcer and will never be afraid of any form of violent threats.

“The CSD will uphold its position and act in accordance with the law to ensure that the institution maintains good order and discipline.

But Wong declined to explain whether the officer was attacked because of a personal feud with the assailants, saying the case was still under investigation and it was inappropriate to disclose further details.
