Hong Kong police arrested a 71-year-old man on Saturday for suspected animal abuse after five newborn kittens were discovered in tightly knotted plastic bags inside a rubbish bin.

Police said they made the arrest at around 7pm after carrying out an investigation, with officers finding three adult cats in the man’s home.

The five kittens were handed over to an animal care group for further treatment.

“The arrested person has been released on bail pending further investigation and must report to police in early June,” the force said.

In a statement to the media, the Hong Kong Society for the Prevention of Cruelty (SPCA) to Animals said the domestic shorthair cats retrieved from the suspect’s flat near the scene of the incident were handed over to them for examination and care.
