Hong Kong doctor jailed for sex assault has licence suspended for 9 months

A Hong Kong doctor jailed for sexually assaulting a teenager in a crowded train compartment has had his medical licence suspended for nine months, with an inquiry panel finding that his actions had “tarnished the reputation” of practitioners in the city.
Sunny Li Wing-hei was jailed for two weeks in May 2023 after he was found guilty of assaulting an 18-year-old girl in a Central-bound MTR train by rubbing his groin against her buttocks one evening during the Easter holiday in 2022.
“The offence of indecent assault committed by the defendant on X was very serious,” Fok Tai-fai, chairman of the Medical Council’s inquiry panel, said on Tuesday. “What the defendant did had tarnished the reputation of doctors in Hong Kong.”
Fok added: “It is essential in our view to maintain among members of the public a well-founded confidence that any medical doctor whom they consult will be a person of unquestionable integrity, probity and trustworthiness.
“Any person who lacks these essential attributes can hardly be a fit and proper person to practise medicine.”
Li, then aged 30, was found guilty of indecent assault and sentenced at West Kowloon Court.
The court heard that Li had used a vibrator on his genitals and removed his underpants before he attacked the teenager on April 15, 2022.
