Hong Kong police have arrested a Russian woman on suspicion of damaging a private car and brandishing a knife in Tsim Sha Tsui, with an online video showing her stopping the vehicle in the middle of the road.
Police said they received a report at 6.05am on Saturday that the woman had been hitting the front of a private car, causing scratches on it, before snatching a knife from a nearby newspaper stall.
“The woman was arrested near the Star Ferry pier at 6.33am for criminal damage and possession of an offensive weapon,” a police spokesman said.
The alleged attack took place on a section of Nathan Road outside Mirador Mansion.
A video circulating online shows the woman sitting on Nathan Road before rising and throwing an object resembling a smartphone towards a Tesla car. Drivers nearby shout “Stop!” and “Call the police!” multiple times as she approaches the Tesla.
The woman proceeds to walk towards the driver’s side of the car and attempts to open the door.
The car owner, who is already out of his vehicle, attempts to stop her and the pair briefly scuffle as she tries to pry a windscreen wiper blade from the Tesla.
The police spokesman said after the scuffle, the woman snatched a knife from a newspaper stall nearby and waved it around.
A criminal investigation team from Tsim Sha Tsui police district is handling the case.
The maximum penalty for criminal damage in Hong Kong is 10 years’ imprisonment upon conviction. Possession of an offensive weapon with intent carries a maximum penalty of a HK$5,000 fine and two years’ imprisonment.
