A 16-year-old Hong Kong student has been sentenced to up to six months at a detention centre for attempted voyeurism after he admitted trying to spy on a female pupil in a school toilet.
Kowloon City Court Magistrate Tsang Chung-yiu on Tuesday told the student to reflect on his actions, while serving time at the Sha Tsui Correctional Institution for young male offenders.
The defendant earlier pleaded guilty to a count of attempted voyeurism.
He was caught in the act by the victim in a female toilet at a secondary school in Wong Tai Sin on December 11 last year.
According to the prosecution, the victim noticed someone placing their hand on the floor in the adjacent cubicle. She bent down to look and saw the defendant attempting to spy on her.
She subsequently walked out of the toilet and reported the incident to a teacher.
Before sentencing, Tsang gave the defendant earnest advice: “The court does not want to just deal with your case, punish you and be done with it … We want you to stay on the right path and never go astray.”
Tsang noted the boy had committed a separate offence in the past and been placed under police supervision.
He told the defendant that he cared about him and did not want to see a teenager become a repeat offender, saying it would be “heart-wrenching” if he committed any further offences.
“I’ll be honest with you, spend the next few months reflecting on yourself,” the magistrate said.
Tsang handed down a detention centre order and said he never wanted to see the student in the dock again. The teenager will spend up to six months at the facility on Lantau Island.
Young male offenders at the Sha Tsui Correctional Institution are subject to discipline, strenuous training, hard work and a vigorous routine.
