A stepfather was today given 200 hours of community service for caning his five-year-old stepson 300 times after the boy failed to admit his wrongdoing – a punishment slammed by a Hong Kong magistrate as outdated.
Sentencing Warwick Mok Wai-leung, who caned his stepson 150 times on the palms of his hands on two separate occasions, Principal Magistrate Bernadette Woo Huey Fang said: “Back in the day, our parents would beat us and we wouldn’t dare say anything.
“But not only has this kind of teaching method gone out of fashion, it is also illegal.”
Mok, a 37-year-old car mechanic, previously pleaded guilty in Fanling Court to two counts of wilful assault causing injury to his stepson.
The court heard earlier that one day in March, the boy took an apple from an altar at their Sha Tau Kok home for their dog to play with.
Mok learned about the incident from his father, but when he confronted the boy, he was told it was the dog which took the apple.
