A young drug offender begged a judge yesterday to show leniency when sentencing her and take into account a wretched childhood in which her mother stabbed her father to death when she was three years old.

Yik Wing-yu, 20, admitted in the Court of First Instance to trafficking 75.57g of the drug Ice with a street value of HK$43,390. She was caught with the drug when police officers stopped her in Mong Kok on June 23 last year.

In mitigation, defence lawyer Priscilla Lam read out a letter that Yik had written to the court in which she said: "In the past, my mother did something wrong, and now it is my turn."

Lam said Yik also wanted to thank the police officers for arresting her so she could have this chance to shake off drugs and turn over a new leaf.

The court heard that her mother, Yik Po-man, also committed a criminal offence when she was 19 - the same age at which the daughter was arrested.

Then in 2000, Yik Po-man was found guilty of manslaughter for killing her boyfriend, Cheung Wai-man, 19. She was also convicted of one count of preventing the lawful burial of Cheung's body and was jailed for 10 years on both charges.
