Former feng shui master Peter Chan Chuen-chun refused an offer of HK$15.7 billion to settle the battle over Nina Wang Kung Yu-sum's estate, the Court of Appeal heard on Friday.

Chan's lawyer, James Wood QC, disclosed that the tycoon's Chinachem Charitable Foundation made the approach three months after Wang died in April 2007. It valued her estate at about HK$45 billion.

But Wood said his client - who is trying to overturn a 12-year-jail term stemming from his conviction two years ago for forging Wang's will - was not allowed to produce the evidence at his trial.

"If he was the forger of the will, he would not reject such a sum," Wood said.

Wood said Chan initially offered to give HK$2 billion to the foundation to settle the probate proceedings soon after he disclosed he had Wang's will. But the foundation refused.

The lawyer said that the judge further denied Chan a fair trial by refusing a request by his defence team to submit other evidence used in the probate battle showing Chan in a positive light. This was a statement referring to a promise Chan made to Wang, who was suffering cancer, that he would take over her role in caring for her father-in-law, Wang Din-shin, after her death.
