Man, 70, killed by Hong Kong school bus in morning spate of road accidents

About 90 minutes after the 70-year-old’s death, incidents involving trucks and minibuses injure 11

An elderly man died and 11 people were injured in separate road traffic accidents in Hong Kong over a two-hour period yesterday morning.

The 70-year-old man, surnamed Li, was knocked down by a school bus while crossing Des Voeux Road West in Western district about 7am

“The man was knocked unconscious when he was hit by the bus,” a police spokeswoman said. He was taken to Queen Mary Hospital in Pok Fu Lam, where he was declared dead about half an hour later.

Police arrested the 59-year-old female driver of the bus on suspicion of dangerous driving causing death. She was released on bail and ordered to report back to police next month.

Police appealed for any witnesses to contact officers from the Hong Kong Island traffic unit on 3106 8838.

There were no passengers on board the school bus at the time of the accident.

In another accident, a minibus and a cement mixer collided at the junction of Kwun Tong Road and Hong Ning Road in Kwun Tong at about 9am.

Nine passengers aboard the minibus – four men and five women – were injured. They were treated at the nearby United Christian Hospital.

The 39-year-old minibus driver, and the truck driver, 41, were unhurt. Police said both passed a breathalyser test. Officers from the Kowloon East traffic unit were investigating.

At 9.06 am, a minibus and two trucks collided in Shing Mun Tunnel Road, Sha Tin. The 39-year-old river of one of the trucks and a female minibus passenger, 64, were treated for minor injuries at Prince of Wales Hospital. Police are investigating the cause of the accident.
