Shi Deyun, wanted for double murder in United States, tells bail hearing he feels ‘muddle-headed’

Chinese national, wanted over the murders of his two teenage nephews, sent to hospital as bail hearing adjourned

A double-murder suspect who surrendered for extradition to the United States was sent to hospital on Monday morning, after claiming he was “muddle-headed” and that he feels like people around him are trying to kill him.

Shi Deyun, 44, appeared at the Eastern court on Monday morning to review his bail application after it was rejected once last week.

The Chinese national is wanted by the United States government over the murder of his two teenage nephews in their home in Arcadia, California, on January 22. He is also accused of assaulting his wife.

But his bail review proceedings came to a halt when he replied to a simple question of whether he needed a lawyer: “I’m very muddle-headed now, I don’t know how to answer you.”

Asked if he needed time, Shi told the court that he lost a lot of blood earlier in the morning.

“Just now when I went to toilet to defecate, I lost a lot of blood,” he said. “I feel like a lot of people surrounding me are trying to kill me, I don’t know what’s the situation now.”

“Do you need the doctor?” asked magistrate Lee Siu-ho.

“I don’t know what I can do now. I only know my condition is very poor now and I cannot move around. I am very muddle-headed now,” Shi continued, adding that he did not know what had happened in the past few days.

Lee replied that an ambulance could be arranged as needed, and suggested Shi consult the duty lawyer in the meantime. Shi agreed.

“The defendant’s application for bail is adjourned to such day and time pending the defendant’s completion of medical examination,” the magistrate ordered. “In the meantime he is remanded in jail custody.”

Shi was picked up by an ambulance at 12:30pm and sent to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital in Chai Wan ten minutes later.

Shi left Los Angeles on January 22 and arrived at Hong Kong International Airport the next afternoon, where he was provisionally arrested by six officers and taken to the North Lantau Hospital.

His extradition case has been adjourned to February 11 for the US government to prepare a full request for his surrender.

Hong Kong has since January 1998 allowed the transfer of fugitives with the United States through a mutual legal assistance deal with Washington.
