A bedridden 80-year-old man was apparently bludgeoned to death with a metal drain cover in a pre-dawn attack at a private elderly home on Wednesday, which put another man in hospital with life-threatening injuries. The victims’ 87-year-old roommate, surnamed Chow, was arrested at the scene in connection with the attack. It is understood he is a dementia sufferer. The bloodstained drain cover, which was about 30cm long and 10cm wide and had probably been removed from the room’s toilet, was found at the scene, according to Superintendent Martin Wong Kai-chung of Kwun Tong police district. He said investigations showed it was the weapon used to attack the two victims. The case came to light at about 5.30am on Wednesday, when staff found the two men unconscious and hurt in their fourth-floor room of Haven of Hope Woo Ping Care and Attention Home on Pui Shing Lane, Tseung Kwan O. Three staff members arrested at Hong Kong care home over allegations of abuse The two residents – Wong Shek-hung, 80, and Mui Ching-wah, 84 – were bedridden and unable to take care of themselves, requiring special care. “Initial investigations showed they were repeatedly struck on the head and body while they were in bed and probably asleep,” the superintendent said, adding that the victims had suffered multiple injuries. A source with knowledge of the investigation said Wong and Mui were hit on the head more than 10 times, and the pillows and sheets were soaked with blood. Wong was taken to Tseung Kwan O Hospital, where he was declared dead. Mui was taken unconscious to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Yau Ma Tei, where he was in critical condition around midday on Wednesday. The suspect was in the corridor outside the room when police arrived and arrested him. Initial investigations showed that the three men lived in the same room and had stayed at the elderly home for about two years. Kwun Tong district crime squad officers are investigating. It is understood that the three had no long-standing dispute. The incident has been classified as a “murder and wounding” case. At 12.30pm, the suspect was being held for questioning and had not been charged.
