A young waiter sprinted away from the Eastern Court building after admitting that he sent emails to trick Legislative Council staff into believing a bomb would go off in their toilet in January.

The emails triggered the deployment of three police emergency unit vehicles, 14 police officers plus a number of fire engines and fire fighters, and drew a pack of reporters to the Legco complex building on January 14. But nothing was found during the four-hour search inside and outside of the building vicinity.

Tsang Tze-kin, 23, who has hearing difficulties, pleaded guilty in sign language on Monday to one count of communicating false information as to the existence of bomb.

He will be sentenced on August 8, pending a probation officer report, community service order report and psychological report.

Chief magistrate Clement Lee Hing-nin said he is open to all sentencing options as the offence was “quite serious”.

Eastern Court heard that a Legco public information officer received the first threat at 11.42am that day, with an email saying: “I placed faeces in the Legco, you will not find me, the Legco is rubbish.”
