A four-year-old boy survived an eight-storey fall from his luxury flat in Tai Po on Thursday afternoon. Initial investigation showed that a fibreglass canopy broke his fall at the lower floors of private housing estate Mayfair By the Sea on Fo Chun Road, police said. The boy was found conscious and lying on a podium beneath the canopy, a police spokesman said. He was taken to Prince of Wales Hospital in Sha Tin, where he is now receiving treatment. The case came to light when a female security guard discovered the child on the podium of the building at about 12.30pm. Emergency personnel were notified. A police source said early investigations showed that the boy fell out of the window of his flat when he was alone in his bedroom. His fall was broken by a canopy before he landed on the podium. It is understood that his mother was at home at the time of the incident. Crime squad officers from Tai Po police district are investigating if negligence was involved.
