Hong Kong’s next chief executive will have the job of appointing a new chief justice with incumbent Geoffrey Ma Tao-li set to reach retirement age in four years.

Ma, who is seven years into his job, will turn 65 in 2021 – the penultimate year of the incoming administration. The head of the judiciary, however, has yet to drop any hints regarding his retirement plans.

While it would be legally possible for the chief executive to extend his tenure for three to six years, a source close to the judiciary said it would be “highly unlikely” for Ma to do so, given his predecessor Andrew Li Kwok-nang stepped down at age 62.

“I would not be surprised if Ma simply steps down by 65,” the source said.
