Lucky escape for Hong Kong motorist as car flies off flyover after smashing through railings

Driver said to have been distracted by mobile phone ringing before he lost control

A Hong Kong motorist escaped serious injury on Friday when his car smashed through railings and fell off a flyover outside the Lion Rock Tunnel in Kowloon Tong.

Police said his car had been travelling along the Waterloo Road flyover before it fell about four metres onto Broadcast Drive Garden at about 9.45am.

“The driver told police that he lost control of the car when his phone was ringing and his attention was diverted,” a police source said.

The man was treated for minor arm and leg injuries at Caritas Medical Centre in Cheung Sha Wan.

Separately, a suspected jaywalker died after being knocked down by a delivery van in Kwai Chung on Friday afternoon.

The man, aged in his 20s, was trying to cross Cheung Wing Road near Kingsway Industrial Building at about 1.45pm, according to police.

He was taken unconscious to Yan Chai Hospital in Tsuen Wan, where he was certified dead at about 2.30pm.

Officers from the New Territories South traffic unit were investigating whether the victim had been jaywalking.

A police spokeswoman said at about 3pm that the driver, 59, was still helping police with their inquiries.
