Off-duty Police Tactical Unit officer killed in multi-vehicle crash in Sha Tin

Victim, 28, was on motorcycle heading home on Tai Po Road

An off-duty officer from the Police Tactical Unit was killed in a multi-vehicle crash in Sha Tin on Tuesday night.

The 28-year-old constable from the New Territories South police unit was headed to his Fanling home on his motorcycle at about 7.50pm, after finishing a shift at the squad’s headquarters in Tsuen Wan.

He was northbound on Tai Po Road near Wo Che Estate when he slowed down due to traffic conditions, as did the two cars behind him in the same lane.

But a third approaching car did not decelerate sufficiently and hit the vehicle in front of it, pushing it forward and causing a chain collision.

He was later confirmed dead by paramedics at the scene.

The driver of the third car behind the victim was taken to Prince of Wales Hospital with minor injuries. The front of his vehicle was severely damaged.

The 52-year-old man was arrested for dangerous driving causing death.

As of Wednesday morning, he was still being held for questioning and had not been charged.
