One dead, two injured, in separate car accidents on Hong Kong roads
Unidentified elderly woman dies after taxi hits her in Kwun Tong, and two women sent to hospital after car accident at Yau Ma Tei pedestrian crossing
A taxi driver was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving causing death after his car collided with and killed an elderly woman in Hong Kong before daybreak on Friday.
The man, 68, was driving along Hong Ning Road, Kwun Tong when the accident happened just before 6am. His taxi knocked down the woman, 81, as it neared the junction with Chun Wah Road.
“The victim suffered serious head injuries and she was taken unconscious to United Christian Hospital, where she was declared dead at 6.19am,” a police spokeswoman said.
She said no identification document was found on the victim, but the woman was about 1.7 metres tall, of stocky build, and wearing grey trousers and black shoes.
Police arrested the taxi driver. At 5pm, he was still being held for questioning and had not been charged.
The force appealed for witnesses to contact officers at the Kowloon East traffic unit on 2305 7500.
Separately, a car knocked down two women aged 41 and 53 at the traffic-controlled pedestrian crossing area on Gascoigne Road nearPak Hoi Street in Yau Ma Tei just before 8am.
The older woman suffered head injuries and fell into a coma, police said, while the younger woman had a leg injury. They were sent to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for treatment.
The police spokeswoman said the driver of the car, a 33-year-old woman, was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm.
According to police, she was released on bail, pending further investigation. She must report back to police next month.
The 53-year-old woman was in serious condition on Friday night. The other woman was discharged after treatment.
