Domestic helper arrested over discovery of fetus in Hong Kong public toilet

Police still searching for another woman seen with suspect in surveillance footage

An Indonesian woman was arrested in Hong Kong on Monday over the discovery of a fetus in a public toilet three weeks ago.

At about 7.30am, police raided a flat in the Metro Town housing estate on King Ling Road, Tseung Kwan O, and detained the 33-year-old domestic helper.

She was arrested on suspicion of concealing the birth of a child. The offence carries a maximum penalty of a two-year imprisonment.

The woman was being held for questioning at North Point Police Station. She has not been charged.

A police source said the suspect was one of the two women wanted by police in connection with the case.

Authorities were still searching for the other woman.

On November 6, the 28-week-old fetus was found by a cleaner in the female toilet on the first floor of a market in Java Road Municipal Services Building in North Point.

Security camera footage showed two women acting suspiciously before entering the toilet at about 3pm a day before the discovery, police said.

The cleaner noticed blood in the toilet bowl at about 4pm on the same day, but she did not think it was cause for alarm. On the following day, she found the toilet bowl was clogged and discovered the fetus as she tried to clear the blockage. She then notified police.

Investigators were told that a lot of domestic helpers used the toilet on Sundays.

The arrested woman was tracked down after officers reviewed surveillance footage.

At about 10.30am on Monday, the suspect, who was hooded and handcuffed, was taken to the police station.

The source said initial examination showed it was not a case of infanticide. “We believe it was a miscarriage or an abortion,” he said.

Detectives from the Eastern District crime squad were handling the case.
