Hong Kong motorcyclist on joyride dies after slamming into truck in Kwai Chung
Source says no brake marks at scene, suggesting rider lacked time to react
A motorcyclist was killed and his pillion rider seriously injured when their sports bike slammed into a truck during a joyride in Hong Kong soon after midnight on Friday.
Li Fun-yiu, 23, was riding the Kawasaki Ninja 300 along Container Port Road South in Kwai Chung when the crash happened at 12.02am. The passenger was his friend, Fung Man-lai, 22 – a university student – who owns the motorcycle.
The Post understands Li rode his scooter with his girlfriend to the site to meet Fung before switching to the Kawasaki.
The truck, hired by RTHK to deliver filming equipment, was making a U-turn near Container Terminal 8, blocking the two-lane motorway at the time, police said.
“The motorcycle was travelling at a high speed and slammed into the truck in a flash,” a police source said.
Li and the motorcycle slid under the truck in the crash and Fung hit the body of the vehicle, he said.

Li suffered serious head and neck injuries and had lost consciousness before emergency personnel arrived.
He was taken to Princess Margaret Hospital, where he was declared dead at 12.36am.
Fung suffered head injuries and was taken conscious to the same hospital, where he was admitted into the intensive care unit. “We were told his condition was not life-threatening,” the source said.
Police said the truck driver, 50, was unhurt and arrested for dangerous driving causing death.
The source said no motorcycle brake marks were found at the scene, suggesting that Li did not have time to react.
He said police were also investigating whether the motorbike was travelling beyond the speed limit of 50km/h.
The crash occurred after the truck had delivered the filming equipment to RTHK crew. The station was filming a programme at a nearby site.
After they were alerted about the incident, the crew wrapped up filming at 1am, several hours ahead of schedule. RTHK’s head of corporate communications, Amen Ng Man-yee, said it was saddened by the accident and expressed its condolences to the family of the deceased.

In March 2015, two pilots in a Porsche were killed when their car slammed into a flyover pillar and burst into flames on the same road.
According to official statistics, 94 people died in 90 fatal road accidents across the city in the first 11 months of the year.
