The leader of Hong Kong’s largest pro-Beijing political party has denied criticism that the recent appointment of a party member to a university’s governing council was a “political reward” for her anti-Occupy stance.
Starry Lee Wai-king, chairwoman of the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong, today defended the government’s decision to appoint solicitor Maggie Chan Man-ki to the Lingnan University council.
Lee, speaking during a DBC radio show, rebutted suggestions Chan lacked public service experience. She said Chan had served as a council member at another university for six years and was now a district councillor.
“She has such experience,” Lee said. “Also she is a veteran lawyer, a district councillor and is experienced in district affairs.
“She is a suitable candidate.”
