‘Ten Years’ film is absurd and too pessimistic, says Global Times
Editorial says scenes depicted in the film simply will not happen in 10 years time
A mainland newspaper has slammed the independent Hong Kong film Ten Years, calling it “absurd”.
Ten Years is set in the year 2025, and depicts a dystopian future for Hong Kong, in which the Chinese Communist Party is exerting its influence.
In the editorial published on Friday, Global Times said the film presents the future of Hong Kong in 2025 with great pessimism.

It said the scenes depicted in the film simply will not happen in 10 years time, and most people in Hong Kong will not take it seriously.
“If the filmmakers want to scare the public in Hong Kong and spread anxiety, they should consider what consequences this will have on the city,” the newspaper said.

It added that: “The film has only made around three million dollars. Hopefully this means it has only influenced a small group of people in Hong Kong.”
The strongly political film comprised five short films, and was an unexpected local box office hit.
