Legco run has nothing to do with getting free-to-air TV licence, says HKTV’s Ricky Wong
Media maverick hopes to decide by June if he will stand for election in September

Technology and media maverick Ricky Wong Wai-kay says his interest in running in the upcoming Legislative Council elections has nothing to do with his effort to obtain a free-to-air television licence.
Speaking on an RTHK programme on Thursday, Wong, who announced that he planned to contest a geographical constituency, most likely in Hong Kong Island, said he did not believe being a lawmaker would make it easier to get a licence, especially when his main focus was on pushing to replace Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying.
“I don’t intend to shoeshine,” said Wong, 54. “My intention is to find a more honest chief executive for Hong Kong.”
Wong, who said he hoped to make a final decision on whether to run in the September elections in June, said other key points on his agenda included securing rule of law and the “one country, two systems” policy, as well as policies on land and education.
But unlike most in the pan-democratic camp, Wong, who was a member of the Liberal Party from 1993 to 1996, said he did not support filibustering.
