Outspoken former financial services sector lawmaker Chim Pui-chung, known for his colourful and sometimes provocative remarks, has declared he will run in the Legislative Council elections in September.

And in keeping with his flamboyant style, he will finance it with HK$9.77 million he claims to have won at a casino in Macau last week.

Flanked by several friends from the financial sector, Chim announced his comeback to the political spotlight on Monday, saying he planned to contest a seat in the Hong Kong Island constituency, rather than contesting the functional constituency elections.

“Functional constituency is too easy for me. I can win easily. So, I will try direct elections. After all, I live on the Island side. I think it would be better if I can serve my fellow residents on the Island,” Chim said.

“I got scolded by my wife after I told her of my election plan. But if someone like me who knows society and current affairs does not come out to [serve society], it will fall short of society’s expectations.”

Chim, who turns 70 in September, said bad governance under Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying had also prompted him to consider a comeback.
