An undercurrent of tension has always been perceived among them, but the shockwaves Jasper Tsang Yok-sing and John Tsang Chun-wah sent yesterday when they put up their hands for the city’s top job are prompting some to ask if Leung Chun-ying would become a lame-duck chief executive in his remaining term.

Both the outgoing Legislative Council president and the financial secretary possess something the incumbent chief executive lacks – popularity. The duo built their reputation by singing a different and more liberal tune than Leung on contentious issues.

A week ahead of his budget speech in 2015, John Tsang created his first Facebook account and uploaded a selfie with reporters – a move which endeared him to thousands on social media. He also put a positive spin on the rise of localism, contrasting sharply with Leung’s hardline stance.

Without naming anyone, Jasper Tsang last year caused a stir after he warned that a capable leader would still never succeed in putting together a strong team if he was “arrogant and egotistic”.
