The personal assistants of the two localist lawmakers set to be disqualified following the oath-taking saga have been banned from entering the Legislative Council complex with immediate effect in the wake of violent clashes last week.

The decision by the Legislative Council Commission – which supervises the operation of the legislature’s secretariat – came a day after Beijing handed down a legal ruling that will effectively disqualify Youngspiration lawmakers Sixtus Baggio Leung Chung-hang and Yau Wai-ching from Legco.
Last Wednesday the pair tried to forcibly barge into a council meeting alongside their assistants, despite having been banned by Legco president Andrew Leung Kwan-yuen. Six security guards were injured in the ensuing scuffles.

Yau said on Tuesday they did not have any plan at this stage to enter the Legco chamber during this Wednesday’s meeting.

“The Legco Commission strongly condemns the action of the two lawmakers and their assistants,” Andrew Leung said on Tuesday, adding that the pair’s 13 assistants would be banned from entering the Admiralty complex and have their passes invalidated with immediate effect.
