Canto-pop singer-turned-writer Agnes Chan Miling has told a media personality that she was never invited to be the next education minister, following a widespread rumour that she had been recommended as one of the candidates.
Man Cheuk-fei, a former University of Hong Kong council member and founder of online media site Master Insight, told the Post on Saturday that Chan, in an interview with him, told him that she met chief executive-elect Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor during Lam’s campaign to discuss education issues.

But Man said Chan told him that she and Lam never discussed the formation of the new cabinet, and that Chan had not had a chance to meet Lam again after she was elected.

“Rumours about her being the next education chief are everywhere online,” Man said. “[Chan] said she was taken by surprise.”

Lam declined to comment on the rumour on Saturday.

“I will not disclose any details before I have finished forming the cabinet,” Lam said. “I will not comment on any speculation either.”

The rumour was first reported on Friday by online media site Citizen News. Citing sources, it said Lam had recommended Chan to Beijing to be the city’s next secretary for education.
