‘Key mission’ for next Hong Kong leader is improving livelihoods, China’s No 3 leader says
Zhang Dejiang, like the president before him, makes no mention of greater democracy

China’s No 3 leader has told Hong Kong business leaders that the “key mission” for the city’s incoming administration is to focus on improving people’s livelihoods.
Zhang Dejiang, head of the National People’s Congress, the country’s legislature, made no mention of achieving further democracy.
He also praised the three post-handover chief executives for “doing a great deal” to ensure the increasingly polarised city stayed united.
“The heart of the central government, after all, has always been with Hong Kong, caring about Hong Kong,” he said in Beijing while addressing a delegation from the Hong Kong Chinese General Chamber of Commerce.
Zhang made the remarks little more than a month before Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor takes the helm as chief executive on July 1, the 20th anniversary of Hong Kong’s handover to Chinese sovereignty.
