The Chinese army’s Hong Kong garrison has wished everyone a happy Year of the Pig with a reference to Peppa Pig, a character in a British preschool animation series.
In a 34-second video posted on the garrison’s official Weibo account, more than 100 soldiers from the People’ Liberation Army’s air force, navy and army in Hong Kong march on a parade ground.
A man’s voice counts down from 10 to zero as a funky background tune and English subtitles are used in the video.
The soldiers then form themselves into the shape of Peppa Pig’s head, while 20 armoured personnel carriers line up nearby to form the numerals 2019.

“All soldiers of the Hong Kong garrison wish all Chinese people a happy new year, and that everything will go you way!” they chant.
The video, which ends with Peppa Pig’s iconic giggle, has been watched 4.5 million times so far. It was liked by more than 26,000 users, shared by over 10,000, while more than 2,800 comments were posted.
Many of those who wrote comments praised the garrison for its humour and creativity.

But one user also noticed the word “one” was wrongly spelled “noe” in the subtitles. The spelling error was corrected when the video was posted on Twitter by the People’s Daily on Sunday. That version was viewed more than 5,000 times.

Another commenter jokingly questioned why the garrison did not use Hong Kong’s iconic cartoon pig McDull in the formation.
“Hong Kong’s local mascot McDull said he’s not impressed,” the user wrote.
McDull, created by Hong Kong illustrator Alice Mak Ka-bik in the mid-1990s, has regained popularity recently after the city’s Avenue of Stars reopened with a statue of the cartoon pig added.
The mainland is set to mark the Year of the Pig with a film starring Peppa Pig to be released this month, despite an earlier backlash against the popular British cartoon character.

Last year, images of Peppa Pig became shorthand for a growing counterculture of work-shy citizens and anti-establishment “gangster” internet users. Circulation of the cartoon character was banned by the satire-sensitive government.

In a longer version of the video, the PLA soldiers also chanted: “With us in Hong Kong, the motherland and the people can rest assured. In 2019, let’s work hard, stride ahead and chase our dreams together. We bless Hong Kong, our motherland and the world!”
In a statement released on Friday, the Hong Kong garrison’s political commissar Cai Yongzhong also extended his new year blessings to Hong Kong people, and pledged to defend national unity and territorial integrity.
