Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam not invited to Democratic Party’s 24th anniversary dinner despite her HK$30,000 donation last year
- Party vice-chairman says city’s chief executive was spurned because she ‘failed to protect Hong Kong’s core values and the rule of law’

Hong Kong’s leader and justice minister have not been invited to an annual dinner hosted by the city’s largest pro-democracy party, but seven other top officials are set to attend.
The Democratic Party on Monday said it had decided not to ask Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor and Secretary for Justice Teresa Cheng Yeuk-wah to join the celebrations for its 24th birthday on March 19.
Lam raised eyebrows at the event last year by donating HK$30,000 (US$3,820) to the opposition party out of her own pocket.
But party vice-chairman and Southern district councillor Lo Kin-hei said members were disappointed with the pair’s performance over the past year.
“People expect them to protect Hong Kong’s core values and the rule of law, but they didn’t do that,” Lo said.
