Hong Kong’s radical protesters are staging yet another campaign to cause citywide traffic disruptions on Tuesday, after their actions on Monday sparked one of the most violent days of the anti-government movement, which is now entering its sixth month.
Monday’s protests – in which they set up roadblocks on major thoroughfares, hurled objects onto train tracks and splashed buses with paint – paralysed roads and forced the closure of more than 20 railway stations throughout the day.
Also on Monday, a police officer shot a protester at close range, while a man was set on fire by protesters in what police have said was attempted murder.
Protesters have argued their actions would increase pressure on the government, but the city’s leader Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor made it clear on Monday that it would be “wishful thinking” to believe the violence would force her administration to give in.

Six arrests in Tsuen Wan

Police fire tear gas near to City University’s student residence in Kowloon Tong, according to the City Broadcasting Channel, which is operated by the university’s student union. Police take action after protesters gather in the area, and dozens of protesters set up barricades on the roads near to the residence.
The Post asks police to confirm if tear gas has been used.

The Polytechnic University in Hung Hom heightens security measures on campus, after clashes between protesters and police on Monday in which multiple rounds of tear gas are fired.
More security guards are seen at entrances and deny access to those without staff or students identity cards. Riot police patrol footbridges near the tunnel and campus.
Items obstructing campus entrances remain in place, while traffic on the Hung Hom Cross Harbour Tunnel, which is right next to the university, remains normal.



Security tightened at Polytechnic University

At 7.20am, MTR Corporation announces at University Station that train services are suspended, and dozens of stranded commuters leave the station after trains are stopped by objects thrown on the tracks. 
  A 58-year-old commuter, surnamed Ng, says he is affected for the second day in a row by disrupted train services on the East Rail Line. 
  “I think it is Carrie Lam’s problem, they should resolve a political issue with political means,” Ng says, urging authorities to make further concessions.

At the light rail station in Tuen Mun, several people try to stop the light rail train from leaving by preventing train doors from closing. 
“Why can’t we all do something for Hong Kong?” one of them blocking the door says.
At Tiu Keng Leng MTR station, more than a dozen of commuters refuse to get on the train at the police’s request, and all are asked for ID cards. Officers say anyone who refuses will be arrested.

More travel chaos

Train services at Wong Tai Sin station are experiencing delays and passengers are told to use other means of transport. Passengers who exit at this station will not be charged, announcement says.

Services on the East Rail Line are disrupted after protesters hurl items onto the tracks. Services between Fo Tan and Tai Po Market are suspended with trains running at 15-minute intervals between Tai Po Market and Lok Ma Chau; 10-minute intervals between Tai Po Market and Lo Wu; and 6-minute intervals between Hung Hom and Fo Tan.
On the West Rail Line, services between Kam Sheung Road and Tuen Mun station are suspended, while trains are running at 5-minute intervals between Hung Hom and Kam Sheung Road.
On the Ma On Shan Line, services between Shek Mun and Tai Shui Hang are disrupted as objects are found on the tracks.

In Sai Wan Ho, police stop two young girls in school uniform and check their bags and IDs. An angry crowd of about 20 people demand officers release the pair immediately. 
An officer tells the crowd police are there because of an unauthorised assembly, and a resident says they are there because they live there.

A university student says she came with her two friends to Tiu Keng Leng MTR station to help delay trains, but is shocked by police searches on the platform.
“Police ask us where are we heading and want us to get on to trains right now,” she says. “We might travel to other stations and continue.”
Police at Tiu Keng Leng are asking people, one by one, if they are responding to online calls to participate in the traffic disruption.

Protester caught out by police

Police say in a statement that tear gas was fired near to a City University student residence after radical protesters began gathering at 7am.
Some of the protesters are building barricades at the intersection of Tat Chee Avenue and Cornwall Street, the force says, and travellers can expect serious traffic congestion in the area.

Meanwhile, dozens of vehicles are trapped on Cornwall Street.

In Sha Tin, a train is unable to reach the station after objects are found on the track. Passengers on the train walk about 100 metres along the track to reach the station, escorted by MTR staffs. A passenger says he was waiting on the train for about half an hour before he was escorted out. Firefighters are there to assist.

Outside Tsuen Wan West MTR station, riot police search a white Audi as four men in casual clothing stand next to the car. Three backpacks are seen in the rear compartment, and a canister-shape item can be seen. More than 20 riot police are on the spot. Police let the four men go in around 10 minutes.

A 22-year-old City University student who lives in halls says she woke up “outraged” after finding out tear gas was fired near the university’s campus, so she came to “defend her campus” by setting roadblocks.
She feels the police force has been “targeting” university students. “They [police] just hate students and they go to different campuses without any reasonable reasons,” she says.

English Schools Foundation announces the suspension of classes for member institutions today because of safety concerns, and students are asked not to travel to school.
In a letter to parents from Bradbury School, one of the foundations’ primary schools, the school says ESF senior management, “have been meeting throughout the night and again this morning in order to monitor the situation”, and have decided that “suspending classes today is the best and only option available”.

Nick Ho, 26, is at Tiu Keng Leng station and is supposed to go to his medical internship this morning, but is supporting protesters instead after seeing people going to work as usual this morning.
“How can people simply remain silent and go to work as usual?” he says. “I don’t know what I can do, this might be something I could at least take part in.”
As of now, services on the Kwun Tong line are running with just minor delays between Tiu Keng Leng and Ho Man Tin. Riot police remain on the platform.

In response to Monday’s chaos in Hong Kong, the US Department of State says in a statement it is watching the situation in the city “with grave concern”.
“We condemn violence on all sides, extend our sympathies to victims of violence regardless of their political inclinations, and call for all parties - police and protesters - to exercise restraint,” it says.
“The United States urges the Hong Kong government to build on its dialogue with the Hong Kong public and begin efforts to address the underlying concerns driving the protests. We also urge the protesters to respond to efforts at dialogue.”
Britain’s Foreign Office describes Monday’s events as “deeply disturbing”.
“We are seriously concerned by the ongoing violence, and the escalation between protesters and police,” a spokesman says. “Protesters should avoid violence, and the police must not respond disproportionately. All sides need to find a way forward through dialogue.”
Hong Kong was a British colony before 1997.

Just another day in protest-hit Hong Kong

A group of 125 people, including former government officials, scholars and professionals issue a joint statement calling on the government to ensure the district council elections are carried out as smoothly as planned.
“It cannot be cancelled due to the disruptions by people with an agenda. Otherwise [the delay] will cause even a greater rift and more instability in the society,” the statement, which appears in today’s local newspapers reads. It also says a fair election would be a peaceful way to resolve disputes in society. 
Signatories include former financial secretary John Tsang Chun-wah, former housing and transport minister Anthony Cheung Bing-leung, University of Hong Kong law professor Johannes Chan Man-Mun, and Chinese University economics professor Sung Yun-wing.
Some in the pro-Beijing bloc have urged the government to postpone the election because of the ongoing street violence. But the pan-democratic camp says a postponement will play to the advantage to the rival camp.

A campus security guard, who gives his name as Miu, says he is upset to see the school damaged.
“I don’t understand why the police had to fire tear gas at the campus yesterday, they just made the students angrier,” he says. “I don’t know when the full-scale campus clean-up will be.”
An IT professional who lives in Hung Hom, and only gives his name as Kwok, arrives at the bus terminal 30 minutes earlier than usual to avoid being late for work.
“I understand that youngsters are mad at the government and their peers have been arrested, one even died,” he says. “But I’m just a worker as well and need to make a living, so I’ll just do what I can to avoid chaos.”

Riot police arrived in Cornwall Street at about 7.15am to pull down barricades that had been set in the area of City University in Kowloon Tong, two students say.
The fourth-year students say they helped to set the roadblocks from around 6.30am.
Police fired rounds of tear gas at 7.18am, with several canisters landing in the student residence area, the students say.
Officers then left briefly at about 7.30am, but returned at around 8am along Cornwall Road and fired rounds of tear gas and rubber bullets at student protesters.
Protesters have been based on a bridge connecting the university’s student residence and main campus.

“It wasn’t chaotic but it was a bit stuffy inside the train,” a man says as he makes it to the platform.
“There were broadcasts on the train that the train hit something and so had to just stop.
“I have waited for about half an hour inside the train.”
Others complain they are going to be late for work.
At about 8.30am, the MTR announced a train was unable to stop at Sha Tin station because objects were hurled onto the tracks, forcing hundreds of passengers to walk about 100 metres to the station platform along the tracks.

In her weekly briefing, Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor says it is “extremely selfish” for radical internet users to call for people to paralyse Hong Kong on Tuesday. 
“I noticed that people from all walks of life are dedicated to their positions, and would not bow down to violence and radicalism,” she says.

A maintenance professional says he still supports the protesters despite his role, which includes repairing Octopus machines.
Octopus cards allow for travel on Hong Kong’s under-attack railway and the machines that top-up card balances are among the facilities vandalised at stations by radical demonstrators.
“My job requires me to go to different places where maintenance is needed, so the citywide blockage affects me a lot,” he says, giving his name as Victor.
“But my boss understands. So the time is kind of flexible.”
He says it took him two hours by taxi to get home to Tsuen Wan last night, a journey that usually takes 30 minutes, because the driver had to divert around the protests.
“But I understand that protesters [are] blocking traffic today after the police shot a young man with live rounds in Sai Wan Ho ,” he says.
He says damaging facilities is acceptable when compared with “outrageous police violence”.
The company Victor works for is a contractor of MTR. He stresses his profession is not affected by his political views. 
“My boss and I always argue because we have different views,” he says. “But work is work.”

Carrie Lam is asked why the government did not announce the suspension of school classes.
“Internet users wanted to create the effect that Hong Kong has stopped running,” she says. “If the government is stopping our daily activities, we would be falling into the trap that the city is indeed paralysed.”


Business as usual, Hong Kong’s leader says 

The MTR announces that Mong Kok station is closed, following the earlier closures of those at Sai Wan Ho, Tung Chung and Kwai Fong. Tung Chung is now open again, but the MTR says there is an “escalation of the situation” inside Mong Kok station.
On the East Rail Line, services between Tai Wai and Tai Po Market are suspended, and services at other stations on the line are experiencing delays. 
On the West Rail Line, services between Kam Sheung Road and Tuen Mun are suspended.


MTR update: Mong Kok closed

A student representative on Polytechnic University’s council says he saw a woman surrounded and arrested by riot police on the campus, outside the Lee Shau Kee Building, also known as the Y Core.
Owan Li, who is also a candidate for the upcoming district council elections, says it is not clear whether the woman was a student or member of staff at the university. It is not known why she was arrested.
Li, who is running for seat in Tai Kok Tsui North, says he asked police to calm down and tone down their language, reminding them to uphold the police discipline code.
He tells the Post that six officers led him outside the campus, where he alleges they kicked him, leaving what he describes as a few scratches.

A teacher at an international school in Hong Kong hits out at the Education Bureau for not closing schools on Tuesday given the levels of unrest.
“They are sending kids into danger,” the staff members says.

Last week, a five-member international expert group appointed to advise Hong Kong’s police watchdog said the Independent Police Complaints Council (IPCC) lacked the power and resources to meet the demands of investigating the force’s conduct during protests.
Carrie Lam is asked if the group’s findings show that an independent commission of inquiry is needed. But the chief executive says she will not make a decision at this stage. “We will wait for the IPCC’s preliminary report first and study the issue in a detailed way,” she says.
Lam also says the government will do its best to make sure the district council elections are held as scheduled on November 24.

In a letter to students and staff, university bosses condemn the acts of “a group of masked people with unknown identities” who vandalised the Cheng Yick-Chi Building, as well as president Professor Way Kuo’s office, on its Kowloon Tong campus on Monday night.

Some workers say the damage was caused last night, and riot police are at the scene helping as some drivers try to wipe spray paint off the windshields.

Service on the Kwun Tong line remains slow, and the train a Post reporter is riding stops at each station for between 1 and 3 minutes. 
At Kowloon Bay, 12 black-clad protesters try to block the train doors and get into a brawl with a few passengers on the train, who tell them to get out as they need to go to work. Protesters let the train go after a few minutes. “Ok, you go to work! Make money and buy a flat!” a protester yells as the door closes.

Cheung, who lives in Tai Po, has been trying to get to work since 7am, and is delayed again at Hung Hom as police carry out an arrest on a footbridge.
“Of course it’s inconvenient,” she says. “But I’m afraid of being attacked by police and speaking out to protesters as well. In the end, I’m a Hongkonger and I will side with my people, not the police.”

Passengers stuck at Prince Edward MTR station are demanding an explanation for the sudden closure of the major interchange.
A passenger, angered by the disruption caused by protesters, is being taken to hospital after reportedly suffering high blood pressure as arguments broke out.
As he emerged from the station in a stretcher, some people outside the gate hurl abuse at him.

Commuters at Prince Edward left in lurch

Hongkongers are relying on their legs to reach their destinations with two busy MTR stations, Prince Edward and Mong Kok, both closed.
Lai, a cosmetologist, in her 30s, who works in Tseung Kwan O, says she is late for work and blames the protesters.
“Someone affected the closing of the doors, and it is really disturbing,” she says. “I don’t know what transport I can take - roads are blocked in Mong Kok as well.”
At the bus stop outside Prince Edward station, some people are waiting for buses, but these are also running late.



Walking to work

Matthew Evans, the dean of the University of Hong Kong’s faculty of science, is at the school’s campus to talk to protesters, some of whom are HKU students.
“What is the bigger thing? Is the bigger thing standing here and chucking a rock at a policeman, or, to say, ‘I don’t need to do that, I am bigger than that, I am better than that, I will be one of the people who tries to solve the problems’,” he says. “Chucking rocks will only continue the problems.”
He tells reporters there has to be a solution that “we collectively find among ourselves”.
“What is happening now is not sustainable,” he says. “What happens is that the police come, there is a fight, people get arrested. And then tomorrow it starts all over again. Maybe not here, somewhere else. There’s not an end. It needs to end, somehow.”
Other HKU academics talking to protesters at the campus include Professor Fu Hualing from the law school, and Professor Paul Yip Siu-fai from the department of social work and social administration.
“These are kids,” Evans says. “They are my students, they are other people’s students, sons and daughters of families. They are kids. I am actually worried.”


Throwing rocks not the solution, HKU dean tells protesters

A hotel worker, surnamed Lam, is keeping his children at home on Tuesday, fearing for their safety if they were to head to primary school amid MTR closures.
“My sons told me the station was closed and they were afraid of the riot police around. So I called the school and said my kids will have to stay home,” says Lam, who works in Hung Hom and lives in Tung Chung.
Lam says he usually takes the train but was stuck in traffic for an hour because of the roadblocks.

Most shops in Nathan Road, one of the main commercial roads in Hong Kong, are open as usual.
Prince Edward and Mong Kong stations serving the area are closed because of an “escalation of the situation” at those interchanges, says MTR Corp.
However, some stores with mainland China links, including Mi Home Hong Kong and a few jewellery stores, were still closed as of 11.40am.
A jewellery shop targeted by graffiti has opened, with staff seen assessing the damage.

A source says the 21-year-old student who was shot by a police officer on Monday and is being treated at Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital has been taken off sedation, and his condition has improved from critical to serious.

A source said the man who was set on fire by protesters in Ma On Shan on Monday suffered burns to 44 per cent of his body. He remains in a critical condition in the intensive care unit of the Prince of Wales Hospital.
According to the Hospital Authority, as of 7.30am on Tuesday, 128 people were injured in clashes on Monday, and required hospital treatment. Of those, one was listed as critical, five serious, 63 were stable, one’s condition was unclear, and the remaining 58 had been discharged.

Protesters vandalise buses, traffic lights, in Central

Head teachers of some primary and secondary schools decide not to run classes on Tuesday.
They are in the Tseung Kwan O area, which was mired by clashes on Monday between protesters and police, with tear gas deployed.
Among those to close their doors are: Pok Oi Hospital 80th Anniversary Tang Ying Hei College, Chi Lin Buddhist Primary School, Tseung Kwan O Catholic Primary School and HKMLC Ming Tao Primary School.
Rachel Tong Chung-yee, a spokeswoman for Parents United of Hong Kong, says the Education Bureau has a responsibility to thoroughly assess the situation in different districts on whether it is necessary to suspend classes.
Although there is flexibility for parents to keep their children at home, some may fear repercussions if they do so, she adds.
“Some parents would fear if they don’t let their children to go to school, their children might face punishment or pressure from schools or teachers. That’s why it would be best for the bureau to give clear guidelines,” Tong says.



Several schools in Tseung Kwan O area closed

Here is a summary of the unrest in Hong Kong on Tuesday morning:
A train was unable to stop at Sha Tin MTR station at around 8.30am, because objects were hurled onto the railway. It forced hundreds of passengers - including an elderly man requiring oxygen and a pregnant woman - to walk at least 100 metres along the track to the station.
Tear gas was repeatedly fired close to City University in Kowloon Tong towards protesters building barricades near student residences, who police said were throwing petrol bombs. Protesters started gathering there at about 7am, and were still there as of noon.



Over at the Polytechnic University in Hung Hom, dozens of black-clad protesters threw debris on to Chatham Road South while vehicles were passing by. A petrol bomb was thrown onto the railway at Hung Hom station.
At the University of Hong Kong, several academics emerged to try and defuse the situation. One implores protesters to stop attacking police officers and ‘be one of the people who tries to resolve the problems’.
Protesters have been locked in confrontations with police at Chinese University. The anti-government demonstrators have been forming roadblocks outside the university gym using sports equipment. Police warned them to disperse or face tear gas.
In the afternoon, protesters have appeared in Central, where some are trying to bring the city’s business heartland to a standstill.


Tear gas, train chaos, campus violence: a roundup

Chow Pak-kwan, the 21-year-old student who was shot with a live round by a station sergeant in Sai Wan Ho on Monday, has been arrested for unlawful assembly, according to a police source.
The source says another protester, Woo Tsz-kin, 19, who was held at the same location on Monday, has been arrested on suspicion of robbery and possession of offensive weapons.
Woo is accused of attempting to snatch a police gun and officers say they found more than 100 zip ties in his bag.
A separate source told the Post this morning that Chow’s condition had improved from critical to serious.


Shot student arrested for unlawful assembly

Several protesters on the footbridge between HKU MTR station and the University of Hong Kong smash the escalator leading to Pok Fu Lam Road with bricks, and poured water into it using a nearby hydrant for further damage.
Some protesters build more barricades with tied steel fences on a driveway from Pok Fu Lam Road to the university’s car park, while a nearby lift is also damaged.

Protesters vandalise HKU footbridge

Chinese University says it has retrieved sports equipment – such as bows, arrows, and javelins – from protesters who took them from a storage unit on campus. 
“If used inappropriately, it will pose danger to bystanders,” the university says in a statement. 
It also urges staff and students to stay away from conflict sites when entering or exiting the campus.

In Central, a black-clad protester, who gives his name as Dee, says protesters are testing the new strategy of “weekday violence”.
The 25-year-old says protesters have tended to take the streets over the weekend and blocked roads in the late afternoon, but the new approach involves obstructing the heart of Hong Kong’s commercial district at noon on weekdays. “It’s more effective because office people in Central could come down to join,” he says.
Among them is investment banker Jackie Cheung, wearing a black mask with his brown suit.
He says protesting in Central is a good move because it draws international attention, but acknowledges it could hurt the very industry he is in. “But the impact is minimal,” he says. “That is what you need to do when you are going up against a regime which is trying to scare you by using force.”
But taxi drivers on Queen’s Road Central, which is also blocked, are frustrated, and a driver in his 40s, who refuses to give his name for fear of doxxing, says he has been stuck in traffic for more than half an hour. “I haven’t a clue when I will get to leave,” he says.
