Former separatist lawmaker Sixtus Baggio Leung Chung-hang, who fled Hong Kong last November, has co-founded an advocacy group in the United States and vowed to campaign for a boycott of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.

He said the Washington-based Hong Kong Liberation Coalition would also call for more sanctions against officials responsible for human rights violations in the city and help those who fled to avoid arrest over the 2019 anti-government protests.

Leung, the 34-year-old former convenor of Hong Kong localist party Youngspiration, told the Post in a Zoom interview conducted from a “safe house”: “It’s all about exerting real pressure on Beijing, forcing it to adhere to universal values on human rights.”

He said his group intended to adopt a more “action-oriented” approach to work with like-minded partners to pile pressure on China.

But some other Washington-based lobbyists dedicated to Hong Kong issues have given the new group the cold shoulder, questioning Leung’s political good sense and his alleged acquaintance with figures who openly supported the January 6 storming of the US Capitol.
