The South China Morning Post film China’s Rebel City: The Hong Kong Protests has won Best Documentary Feature at the Cannes World Film Festival for the month of November.

The documentary beat out two other finalists: Absolute Power: Nasdaq Exposed, which details the financial institution’s attempt to scapegoat a Chinese-born consultant after investors lost billions on phoney companies from China listed on the exchange; and Why on Earth, a look at how humans’ way of life is affecting nature and the planet.

China’s Rebel City is a no-holds-barred audiovisual account of the months of protests and political and social turmoil that pushed Hong Kong to the brink in 2019.

Post documentary earns Webby Award for Hong Kong protest coverage

The documentary has also won an Online Journalism Award in the “2021 Digital Video Storytelling, Series” category, as well as a coveted Webby award from the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences in the “News & Politics (Video Series or Channel)” category.

“I’m delighted that our video team has won another prestigious award for our critically acclaimed protest documentary,” Post editor-in-chief Tammy Tam said.

“This is world-class journalism getting the international recognition it well deserves. If you haven’t watched China’s Rebel City yet, this is another reminder to catch up!”

As the winner for the month of November, China’s Rebel City is automatically entered into the Cannes World Film Festival’s annual competition. The grand prize winner in each category will be announced in early 2022.

Founded in response to the coronavirus pandemic, which made it difficult for filmmakers to gather in person, the online-only Cannes World Film Festival has drawn submissions from all over the globe. It is not affiliated with the long-running Cannes Film Festival in May.

Post video series on 2019 Hong Kong protests wins another top award

China’s Rebel City was produced by chief news editor Yonden Lhatoo, executive director Mat Booth, executive producer Chieu Luu, senior producer Mantai Chow, lead videographer Chris Healy and video producer Andersen Xia.

The full documentary can be viewed on SCMP.com, Facebook and YouTube.

Another Post film, 32 Years Lost, was a finalist for November in the category of Best Documentary Short at the festival.
