A think tank founded by a former Hong Kong leader has denied a media report suggesting that it would back ex-head of the World Health Organization (WHO) Margaret Chan Fung Fu-chun in March’s chief executive election.

Our Hong Kong Foundation issued a clarification on Thursday after a local newspaper reported the day before that the think tank, founded by the city’s first chief executive Tung Chee-hwa, would support a potential leadership bid by Chan.

“Regarding media reports that Our Hong Kong Foundation would back Margaret Chan Fung Fu-chun to run in the chief executive election, our spokesman would like to say these reports do not reflect the truth,” a statement from the think tank read.

“Our Hong Kong Foundation is a think tank dedicated primarily to research on public policies.”

Media reports had suggested that Chan was approaching talent to form a cabinet. But a long-time friend of hers, who preferred to speak anonymously on the sensitive topic, told the Post that it was unlikely she would run.

Chan has not yet spoken about any plans to seek election, and the Post has reached out to her for comment.
