Hong Kong’s leader will head to Beijing on Sunday for his second duty visit to the capital since taking office, with veteran analysts predicting efforts to attract talent, safeguard national security and consolidate the city’s status as an international financial centre will be high on the agenda.
The annual duty visit, which usually comes around this time of year, provides an opportunity for the chief executive to update state leaders on the city’s economic, social and political developments.
Last year, Chinese President Xi Jinping set out his expectations for Lee’s administration, stressing the importance of building an efficient government that would boost residents’ national identity, foster integration with mainland China and solve the city’s deep-seated livelihood issues.

Sources told the Post last year that one area on the agenda of his maiden visit that December was the reopening of the city’s border with mainland China, which had been largely shut off due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The border was fully reopened earlier this year.
