The seven suspects arrested for allegedly breaching Hong Kong’s domestic national security law marked the city’s first arrests since the law was enacted in March.
Those arrested included six women and a man, detained for allegedly publishing seditious materials on Facebook last year in the run-up to the 35th anniversary of the 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown, with intent to incite hatred of the local and central governments.
Among the suspects was activist Chow Hang-tung, arrested while she was detained for another offence; her mother; a former district councillor; and former volunteers of a now-defunct pro-democracy group that organised annual vigils on June 4th. They were arrested on Tuesday.
